French Bands @ SXSW include:
At first glance, Carpenter Brut's influences are 80s TV shows, B movies loaded with synthesizer music. Listening to his home made EPs, however, one would rather bet on a black metal background, a crush for Dario Argento and a force-fed religious education. This would explain his satanic mood, his passion for kitsch sounds and his adoration for all kinds of enjoyment.

Rage, energy, and dark circles. These are the best words to describe Alix, Jaco, Mattia and Stefano, the four buddies in Odezenne. Their musical ventures never ceased to grow from their debut, culminating now in some kind of new French spoken prose, definitely their own, unique kind. The music could be new wave as much as it could be indie rock as it could be none of these, mixing and weaving several styles throughout the band's high-energy journey, characterized by the passion in their voices.

France has always been a pioneer of electronic and house music and Jacques with his experimental debut has not let us down. Moody and sublime Jacques effortlessly blends an electro soundscape with natural percussion. The music video shows a semi-clothed, shaven Jacques, a la a monk's tonsure, stoically presenting a series of video clips inspired by his 2 months of travelling in Mexico, Britain and India.

Glockabelle plays two Casio VL-Tones, a lyre-shaped glockenspiel with eight thimbles and sings in both French and English. Even if the band has a direct DNA link to trail blazers Tinariwen - (Eyadou Ag Leche of Tinawiren is a cousin of frontman Sadam, and guided their evolution and produced and co-wrote several songs on this album), their poetry and flow has a more integrally urban base than the ancestral tamashek poetry and traditional rhythms of their elders, Tinariwen.

'Out Of The Blue' is an intimate journey exploring the rich legacy inherited by 8 year old Yerick, a child amongst a community of fishermen in Cabo Pulmo who became inadvertent conservationists when faced with the depletion of their marine resources. In an area once described by Jacques Cousteau as the 'Aquarium of the World', the fishermen families of Cabo Pulmo chose to sacrifice the source of their food and income in a revolutionary and dramatic decision: a fishing ban in their own waters in order to encourage marine life to return and find shelter.
