Clovis Nicolas is a jazz bass player and composer living in New York City, who graduated from the Juilliard School. His warm, precise and tasteful bass playing gained him a solid reputation on the international scene, which led to performances with artists such as Peter Bernstein, Herbie Hancock, Jeremy Pelt, Brad Mehldau, Harry Allen, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Curtis Fuller. Parallel to his busy schedule as a sideman, Clovis is also a band leader who released three albums for Sunnyside Record: “Nine Stories” – Best Albums of the Year in DownBeat – “Freedom Suite Ensuite” with Kenny Washington on drums; and “Autoportrait” a solo bass album awarded a 5 stars review in Jazz Magazine.

Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archeologist exploring synthesized sounds, texture, and rhythm using an acoustic cello. For someone with her varied background, New Orleans, with its mix of cultures and music, seemed like a natural place to call home. Born in Belgium, raised in Singapore and routinely shuttled between the homelands of her Belgian father and American mother. Over the years — working in New Orleans with musicians of all stripes, from avant-garde jazz and classical to pop and funk — Gillet has developed a singular polyglot style. French chanson of the 1940s, Belgian folk tunes sung in Walloon, a mix of rock and punk from the likes of PJ Harvey and X-Ray Spex, and her own affecting originals, like audience favorite “Julien,” sung in a mix of French and English. Gillet’s solo performance is known for its enigmatic quality as she fabricates each song with innovative use of the cello and true mastery of live looping technology.

For someone with her varied background, New Orleans, with its mix of cultures and music, seemed like a natural place to call home. She was born in Belgium, raised in Singapore from the ages of 2 to 11, and routinely shuttled between the homelands of her Belgian father and American mother. Over the years — working in New Orleans with musicians of all stripes, from avant-garde jazz and classical to pop and funk — Gillet has developed a singular polyglot style. The core of her work is solo performance with live looping, layering cello parts and vocal lines. Rhythmic figures emerge with bowed or plucked ostinatos or a variety of rubbing and slapping on the body of the cello, then enhanced with melodies played or sung in her haunting alto. Her mixed musical vocabulary is commensurate with her disparate travels — French chanson of the 1940s, Belgian folk tunes sung in Walloon, a mix of rock and punk from the likes of PJ Harvey and X-Ray Spex, and her own affecting originals, like audience favorite “Julien,” sung in a mix of French and English. Kids Return is the story of a childhood friendship between Adrien Rozé and Clément Savoye. The two musicians met in Paris at the age of 13. As in the Takeshi Kitano film that inspired their name, the French duo speak of the depths that lie behind the apparent naivete of childhood, and the evocative power of nostalgia as it erases the boundary between joy and sadness.

More importantly, the album hit a note with the country’s young population.

Their sound is a re-invention, a nostalgic throwback to a time and place mostly imagined where Peruvian waltzes, Andean huaynos and Cuban Guajiras mix with French opera, Cowboy tunes and Bollywood classics. The result plays like a dreamy soundtrack with classical harmonies set to a Latin beat. All three of their albums are available on Barbès Records, including Ziguala, their attempt at reimagining what a pop record would sound like had the global Latin influence - which was so prevalent until the early 60's - continued its course without interruption. Expect forays into Bollywood, Sicilian songs, Kurt Weill and Yéyé.

Harpist, singer-songwriter and producer Laura Perrudin first came to the limelight with the release of her first album Impressions, prompting reviews in Le Monde, the BBC, FiP and Les Inrocks. Poisons & Antidotes – a pop phenomenon blending soul music with electronica and experimental folk, based on the original use of the electric chromatic harp, an instrument created just for her. Using her unique voice to delve into all kinds of research and electronic manipulations, Laura’s very personal universe materializes wonderfully during concerts where her "perfect geek" panoply swells to higher effects using pedals, laptop and multitrack looper to boost both her harp and voice.

Mamady Kouyaté is one of Guinea's most-well known guitarist. The heir to a long line of griots, he was first taught by his father who was one of the first Guinean griots to introduce the guitar. Kouyaté senior specialized in transcribing traditional kora and balafon lines for the guitar and his son Mamady first made his mark as an electric guitarist in the 1970's in some of the national bands that were part of president Sékou Touré’s campaign of Authenticité - a movement that sought to create an afrocentric popluar sound. Kouyaté eventually joined Guinea’s most famous export, The Bembeya Jazz, with whom he toured for years. After some political trouble, Kouyaté relocated to the US in the early 2000’s where he founded the Mandingo Ambassadors, a vehicle for his own music that uses the classic 70’s sound of Guinea's legendary Xylophone recordings.

The iconic and most popular French rapper, MC Solaar found success in America among fans of acid jazz and jazz-rap after guesting on Guru's acclaimed Jazzmatazz project. His fluid phrasing makes up for his lack of English, and the production on his solo work (by DJ Jimmy Jay and Boom Bass of La Funk Mob) surpasses most of his hip-hop contemporaries.
Born in Dakar to Chadian parents, Claude M'Barali could’ve had a career as a footballer, but hip-hop culture caught him, and he became MC Solaar. His first album « Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo » was released by Polydor and won an impressive success that propelled him as the legend who popularized rap in France. His music and the quality of his texts are the result of various inspirations, ranging from Serge Gainsbourg to African music (Ivorian, Malian, Chadian) through American classics (jazz and US rap). MC Solaar has managed to capture the widest audience with the rhythms and lyrics of his songs, but also by his requirement to make original and beautiful videos of his greatest hits. He released on the Play 2 label, the album with the visionary title « Géopoétique ». Thanks to this album, MC won his 5th award at the « Victoires de la Musique ». The next one, scheduled for the end of 2022, will be released on the same label.

From his debut album „Spanish Breakfast“ (2009) on, Parisian Erwan Castex has carved out a recognizable sound under his Rone moniker while pursuing constant evolution. „Tohu Bohu“ (2012) led away from the club focused minimalist aesthetic of its predecessor. Rone found his way in melody-driven, cheerful but melancholy electronica, a style he combined with organic and acoustic influences and many featured artists on his next albums „Creatures“ (2015) and „Mirapolis“ (2017). Among his frequent collaborators were Bryce Dessner (The National), John Stanier (Battles) and Gaspar Claus, plus a wide array of other guest instrumentalists and vocalists.
Recently he worked with French icons Michel Gondry and Jean-Michel Jarre, supported the short movie „Nature Now“ starring Greta Thunberg with his music and wrote the score to Frédéric Farrucci’s film „La nuit venue“, which won the Best Original Score at the 2021 French Academy Awards. He scored his second film with Jacques Audiart’s “Paris 13th District”, which came out in 2022.

NY based French violinist Adrien Chevalier is mostly known as a first rate jazz and Gypsy swing musician. Adrien has also been playing Balkan music for most of his life and his new project, Sedi Donka Balkan Band, is inspired by the great fiddling bands of Romania and Hungary - such as Taraf de Haidouk - but adds a distinct NY cosmopolitan flavor as well as modern touches, such as electric guitars alongside the violin section; Along with their virtuosity, the band brings on the kind of revelry and conviviality that, we hope, will become the mark of 2022.

Stephane Wrembel is probably the foremost interpreter of Django Reinhardt’s music in North America. Whether sticking to the French master’s arrangements, or taking the music into new territory, Wrembel has always treated Django like a serious composer rather the cliché paragon of swing and speed he has often been portrayed as.
As a composer, Stéphane has scored the theme song to Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" and scored his last film. He performed live for the 2012 Academy Awards, has headlined at Carnegie Hall and the Lyon Opera House and has been called “a revelation” by Rolling Stone magazine. While his playing falls into the general umbrella of Gypsy Swing his weekly sets also showcase his own compositions which owe as much to Django Reinhardt as they do Pink Floyd, Ravel or Middle Eastern music.

With his whimsical, melancholy music, Yann Tiersen has become a sought-after composer, not only for his soundtrack work, but in his own right. Borrowing from French folk music, chanson, musette waltz, and street music, as well as rock, avant-garde, and classical and minimalist influences, Tiersen’s deceptively simple style has been likened to Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass, and Michael Nyman. The Paris-based composer became popular outside his native country for his score to Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie, but like most seemingly overnight successes, he had been working for years before the film’s success brought him international acclaim.
